A question that we get a lot during kitchen renovations is whether to install a kitchen island or not. Not all kitchens need an island, but we have laid out the pro’s and con’s for you to decide what you need. No wrong answers here, just facts.

Kitchen Island or Not?

Pro’s FOR a Kitchen Island

The biggest pro of installing a kitchen island during your renovation is the additional space that it provides. Extra space for food prep, appliances and eating. It also creates a central space for your guests to gather around. You can also add cabinets and drawers to your island, allowing for that extra storage space that every kitchen needs. From a design perspective, it helps to create a defined space for the kitchen, especially for open layouts.

Con’s AGAINST a Kitchen Island

The biggest reason not to install a kitchen island is space. Not every home or apartment has the room to afford the additional space an island may take over. If you try to force a kitchen island, you may create an awkward work flow. Keeping the flow between the stove, sink and fridge is the most important thing when designing a kitchen space. Cost is also something that you should factor in. Island can become expensive and quickly eat into any kitchen renovation budget. If you plan to add any extras like plumbing or electrical, the costs will increase significantly.
